World Press Photo 2007: The world’s best news photos, along with sport, nature and celebrity shots, will be shown in Arrecife in an event that always leaves the visitor astonished, impressed, and at times open-mouthed.

La Geria Bodega holds a traditional fiesta to celebrate the wine harvest on Lanzarote on August 15th. Camels bring baskets of grapes to the bodega, where they are dumped into stone vats. The public can then have a go at trampling them. It’s a fun glimpse into the island’s past. The harvesting begins in the morning, treading gets under way around midday and there is also a mass and general merry making later on.

If next month’s Romeria to Mancha Blanca is the island’s most moving fiesta, the San Ginés celebrations in Arrecife are perhaps the island’s most typical. There will be traditional music on the Charco de San Gines, the famous jolatero race, in which kids use their sandals to paddle home-made boats across the lagoon, and many religious ceremonies at the pretty Church of San Ginés
